Sand being the most used material in construction activities is becoming scarcer day by day. River sand mining is a big business in coastal areas of India. This article discusses the problem of illegal sand mining in Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka State, India and the method adopted to tackle such activities through the use of GPS. Due to environmental hazards created by uncontrolled sand mining in the neighboring Kerala State, the high court of Kerala had banned sand mining in the state. This came as a severe blow to construction activities in the state. Thereafter many alternatives were chalked out.

“Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.” – National Institute of Standards and Technology defines Cloud computing like this. Pioneers in cloud computing arena are Salesforce, Google, IBM and Amazon to name a few. Cloud computing enables organizations to scale down their investments for hardware and software. Maintenance costs are also reduced. There are several deployment models like public cloud, community cloud, hybrid cloud and private cloud.

In my previous post I discussed about the issues faced in CAD to GIS conversion when using basic utilities of ArcGIS. In this post I will discuss the route taken by me to convert a set of DWG files to SHP format. If you are working with a data pertaining to a large area or data with a large number of layers Data Interoperability extension for ArcGIS becomes very essential. While Data Interoperability can handle nearly 100 data formats, FME Desktop on which Data Interoperability is based on can handle 300+ formats. Whatever conversion you need these software have an answer - cad to gis (shp, geodatabase, kml, 3d pdf etc.)

Scenario: Since times immemorial CAD drawings have been used in all kinds of Civil Engineering works. CAD offered lot of advantages to a user - to work on large amount of data in less time, easy storage and retrieval, more accuracy, easy editing, options to duplicate and so on. Only thing CAD drawings lacked is intelligence. By this I mean, each CAD entity is not connected to another one at all. If there is one highway and another village road, both are placed in different layers and their intersection can be seen but cannot be used for analysis like traffic flow. As they aren’t connected if highway is moved other road stays where it is. On the other hand GIS which came in at a later stage did not have these disadvantages. GIS too organized data in layers, but layers possessed intelligence. There was connectivity between elements and analysis could be easily carried out. To add more, GIS came along with facility to define the geographic location(Nowadays, even AutoCAD has this facility) which meant that the data could be overlaid on any world map!

Good news! ArcGIS 10 is released now and available for download (Conditions apply!)!
As a student I have always striven to keep in touch with the latest software in the domain of GIS, office suite, open source software and so on. Almost all the software vendors have a very liberal policy regarding their software at least for testing purposes. It may be ERDAS, Microsoft, FME and so on. All these companies are ready to provide a beta/trial release for free to any user. They insist on registering, which is good, as they can keep track of number of downloads etc. This way I have used ERDAS Imagine 2010, Microsoft Office 2010 beta, FME Desktop 2010(still using) and many more.
